Q: What type of LED’s are used in Tovatec flashlights?
A: Our LED’s are all made by a USA company-CREE. The lumens rating is assigned by CREE and is the output measure of the LED. The actual brightness to the eye is affected by many variables:
Distance-a higher lumen rating may appear similar to a lower one up close but will travel brighter, further.
Reflectors/beam angles-can cause the apparent brightness to vary greatly. Wider angle will seem less bright than focused beam and will not carry as far.
Q: What is the color temperature in Kelvin of your underwater video lights?
A: The Kelvin temperatures typically range between 6000~7000K.
Q: Can I use Rechargeable batteries with my Intova lights?
A: Use of rechargeable batteries is strongly discouraged for models with CR123 batteries. Flashlight circuit design presents tradeoffs. More brightness equals shorter burn time. With CR 123 batteries, we designed them for a specific voltage to allow max burn and brightness. Using rechargeable batteries can cause problems with circuit boards, cause lights to fail and void warranty. They will also deliver significantly lower performance and do not really save money if you calculate the cost of batteries and chargers and the effective burn hours. Non-rechargeable CR123 batteries are available at very aggressive prices-just find the right location to purchase. Rechargeable batteries are OK for AA and AAA models.
Q: Alkaline vs Lithium: which type of battery will perform better in LED flashlights?
A: Brightness will drop off very quickly with alkaline batteries-minutes even. Lithium batteries tend to hold brightness longer and then drop off.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Battery ratings are developed using continual burn time. Actual usage usually involves multiple on/off usage. On/off usage will allow for greater burn time than continuous on.
Q: Can I mix old and new batteries?
A: Do not mix and match batteries. Batteries of different charge levels cause a voltage surge which can create great heat as one battery tries to compensate for another. This can melt cradles and other parts. We recommend replacing all batteries within a device.
Q: Can I mix different battery types?
A: No, NEVER mix Alkaline and Lithium batteries-this can be dangerous and create great heat and even explosions. Mixing a lithium battery with an alkaline battery will not improve device performance. In fact, it will reduce performance. Also, do not mix different battery brands within a device. Doing so will reduce overall performance and may also cause battery leakage or rupture. We recommend using the same type and brand of batteries within a device.
Q: How does the variable power switch on my flashlight work?
A: To operate the switch on our lights with variable power such as the Meganova, Supernova, Ultra, Security Light, Fire/Utility Light, Tactical torch, Mini torch, and Compact torch: press switch once for full power, press second time for reduced power and press third time for off. To activate the strobe setting, press and hold for 3 seconds from any setting.
Q: Do waterproof flashlight switches need to be kept clean?
A: It is very important to clean switches thoroughly or salt/sand will build up. For both push and slide types, rinse thoroughly in fresh water and then manipulate switch. For push button, it is designed to allow water into switch area. This must be flushed out by turning upside down and pressing switch a few times. Repeat rinsing with fresh water and then purge by turning upside down and pushing switch a few times. For slide type, it may be necessary to pop out switch if rinsing and manipulating doesn’t clean it completely.
Q: My flashlight switch is not working properly what can I do?
A: Salt buildup in switches can impair successful operation. Make sure to rinse thoroughly in cold fresh water after each use. Please contact Intova if further attention is required.
Q: Do I ever need to replace the O rings in my flashlight?
A: Yes, maintenance and eventual replacement is mandatory to keep your light operating at peak performance. Visually inspect O-rings prior to each use. O-rings should be clean and free of debris. Even a grain of sand or piece of hair can cause leakage. Inspect for cracks caused by drying of O-ring. To help prevent drying, keep O-rings lightly lubricated with Intova silicone grease. Some industrial silicone lubricants contain minerals that can cause O-rings to expand, crack or otherwise be damaged. Use Intova’s Silicone Grease for safe results-guaranteed!! Watch for “flattening” of the O-ring caused by excessive compression. If signs of cracking or flattening appear, replace O-rings promptly.
Q: What is the LED life for Intova flashlights?
A: Depending on model; from 35,000 to 100,000 hours.
Q: Do you have any advice for traveling internationally with lithium ion battery flashlights?
A: Europe is the strictest area relative to travel with Lithium batteries. Many have traveled through Europe with no problem but we have also had customers report not being able to pass through the carry on check point with attached lithium ion batteries to their lights. Please understand that there is a legitimate and significant risk. That being said, we would suggest checked baggage for any flashlight, removable or non-removable battery version, as safer than carry on. Carry on goes through a much higher level of security and you have to check at each airport you pass through as opposed to once for checked baggage. Further, your checked baggage will be screened in USA when you leave which is a lower concern level.
