One of the most important concepts in underwater photography is manual white balance. As a diver gains depth colors begin to fade, starting with oranges and reds. Manual white balance is a way of letting your camera see these colors and then adjust to reproduce them more accurately. Manual white balance allows your photos to appear in greater color and avoid a “washed out” look dominated by Blues and Greens.
You will need a white slate to use in setting white balance.
-Turn Flash OFF.
– Manually white balance every 5-10 ft of depth as water and light conditions change with depth.
-On most Intova cameras:
Press Menu Button
Select Manual White Balance
Place your white slate in front of the camera and select execute, camera will take a picture of white slate.
Make sure the white slate fills the whole screen while you take this picture.
-You’ve just manually white balanced!

Torches! This was the buzz around Intova at the DEMA Show 2009. November started strong, as the Intova team joined thousands of other dive industry professionals at the world’s largest international trade-only event for the diving, action water sports and travel industries. Intova’s ever expanding line of torches continue to receive rave reviews from users. Intova Sales Representative, Andrew Glasco says “Torches and Camera’s were very well received, but our torches are HOT!!!” With new torch designs like the Mini Torch, and super bright Meganova, Intova is rapidly becoming a player in the industry. Mark Zanetti recalls “I think we had one of the busiest booths at DEMA. Many new dealers signed up, and I heard over and over they had customers tell them about our torches. Once someone buys one, all their dive buddies want one.”
Torches weren’t the only Intova product receiving attention at DEMA, “the new Intova Dive PDA was a show hit,” recalls Intova Sales Manager, Phil Crowe. This industry changing technology allows your windows mobile phone and soon iphone to be converted into the most sophisticated dive computer available. The Intova booth had an entire section dedicated to demonstrating the technology to visitors, and the divephone received much attention from attendees who kept the booth slammed from day one opening through day four closing.
Intova was fortunate to have such a great success at DEMA, as Joe Ganahl recalls, “Traffic was down and many companies were complaining about how slow the show was. It was great for us, but the overall show reflected the significant contraction of the industry in the face of a rough economy.”
Regardless, of how many people came to DEMA, those who were there were talking, and they were talking about Intova. As Crowe says, “I met with several new dive shops that heard about us while attending a seminar or sitting at the hotel bar chatting with an industry colleague – they wanted to come see what Intova was all about. Some came to see the new torches, other wanted to learn about the SS-1000 waterproof digital camera with a retail price under $50.00. No matter why they came to the booth, they appeared to leave interested & excited. We had something for everyone.”
While Intova continues to develop a wider range of products and expands its offering into new markets, one thing remains certain, according to Intova Sales Rep, Vance Kalingo, “ Intova is a growing brand in general but as DEMA 2009 proves, the dive industry remains the bread and butter of the company.”

The film Camera SS01 remains one of our highest volume products. It utilizes a recycled PC Board to control flash output. Unfortunately, the demise of Single Use Cameras has caused the supply of these PCB’s to dry up. As a result, we have had to design and manufacture a new PCB to replace the old style. This took 2 months and has caused a serious disruption in our supply chain. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and look to have these back in the supply channel within 30-45 days. Thanks for your understanding!!

Intova had a very successful end to the month of August, with an outstanding showing at the Surf Expo. As Intova Sales Representative Andrew Glasco recalls, “Intova witnessed amazing response and interest from industries on the cutting edge of extreme sports looking to incorporate their passions and sports with instant multi media postings.”
With the growth in popularity of online photo and video sharing, an increasing number of extreme sports enthusiasts look for gear that can help them share their adventures with the online community. Intova offers durable outdoor products at low price points, specifically designed to fulfill this need. As Intova Sales Manager Phil Crowe notes, “Moving forward, we need to work the wind/surf/skate/sport industry much, much more. We have tremendous opportunities here!”
Among other exciting news, Intova unveiled the SS1000 camera, a new hybrid concept for waterproof digital cameras. This patent pending design combines traditional deep water polycarbonate housing design with a digital PC board and LCD monitor mounted directly into the housing. Much to the delight of Intova, the SS 1000 proved popular among a diverse range of attendees. “Besides the surf industry, buyers from department stores, novelty catalogs and hunting outfitters stopped by our booth.” says Peter Jubell, an Intova Sales Rep.
Another highlight of the show was the debut of the new H20 Man Extreme waterproof MP3 player. Intova asked Pro-wakeboarder Joe Phillips to test out the player. Watch the video below to see what Joe had to say!

Designed to sit at the nape of the neck, the unique fit of the H20 Man Waterproof MP3 player allows it to be worn comfortably beneath a helmet. The photo below captures Joe Phillips wearing the player prior to hitting the rails at Surf Expo 2009!

Intova Sales Representative, Vance Kalingo (pictured below) also enjoyed hanging out with Joe Phillips at the show, and says Joe’s “success using our MP3 in extreme impacting conditions can be a great sales pusher for buyers in the wakeboarding community, a market that is completely untapped.” Extreme sports enthusiasts can expect to see more of Intova at events like Surf Expo in the future!

Color Loss is tied to absorption. When water turns light into heat it absorbs the lowest energy levels first. This means that Reds, Oranges and Yellows are absorbed before Greens and Blues. This why many underwater photos appear greenish blue.
It is important to remember that color loss is affected by total water distance light passes through. This means both depth from the surface AND distance between camera and subject. The greater the TOTAL distance, the greater color loss.
BLUE OR GREEN PHOTOS: There are several ways to improve color underwater. The simplest is a red filter. The red filter helps add the red spectrum back into photos. DO NOT use a red filter in shallow water or with a flash-this will cause excessive reds in pictures.
An external strobe is another solution. A strobe will add light to provide clear illumination of subject and proper coloration.
Setting White Balance to fluorescent helps. Fluorescent is blue light similar to underwater and the camera will adjust for this. Setting White Balance to low light can also improve results. Do not use a red filter and strobe at the same time or a red filter in less than 20 feet of water.
