Do you see funny “bubbles” or spots in your underwater pictures when using a cameras built in flash underwater. This is called backscatter
Backscatter is caused when the light from a built in flash reflects off particles in the water. Since the flash is so close to the lens, the reflection is straight back into the lens and appears as “bubbles” or spots in your picture.
Easiest fix is to diffuse the flash. Many housings will have diffusers available as accessories. A diffuser causes the light to “diffuse” or go out in multiple directions instead of a straight line so there is much less direct reflection back into the lens.
If a diffuser not available for your camera, you can use a variety of materials to construct one. Semi clear plastic bottles maybe several layers, scotch tape and even Vaseline can be used as diffusers.
Best solution for solving backscatter is an external strobe. Because the strobe is extended out on an arm away from the lens, particle reflection is back towards the strobe, not towards the lens. For more information on Intova strobes visit
